About this place

Vila Real de Santa Antonio is the westernmost town in the Algarve. It is located on both the Atlantic Ocean and the Guadiana River, which is the border river between Portugal and Spain.

It is the only city in the Algarve built in a kind of grid technique

And what else?

In the middle of Vila Real de Santo António you will find a beautiful town square, the Praça Marquês de Pombal. This is the main square of the city. It is named after Marquês de Pombal, who founded the city after the 1755 earthquake.

The square consists of typical black and white patterned lines surrounding an obelisk. This monument was placed here in 1776 in honor of the Portuguese King Joseph I. He was the King of Portugal at the time when Marquês de Pombal was Prime Minister. Around the square you will find trees and white buildings. You will find a number of restaurants and bars here where you can sit and have a drink. There are also many shops nearby. The area around the square is also where local events are held.
